What we do
Welcome to Manx Cancer Help
Manx Cancer Help is a local cancer charity providing a vital highly professional service at no cost, to anyone of any age was are affected by any type of cancer.
What we do:-
Approximately 400 adults and 12 children per year are diagnosed with cancer on the Isle of Man, often creating a ripple of trauma and distress that extends to loved ones, as well as the affected individual. Research suggests that 1/3 of people touched by cancer will develop serious levels of distress which will affect their ability to cope with life. Manx Cancer Help employs a team of Clinical Psychologists and Counsellors who provide specialist psychological therapy for anyone affected by cancer, of any age, with no waiting list, which is essential and something we really pride ourselves on. We also provide training and support for cancer teams at Nobles to improve psychological aspects of cancer treatment, in line with national guidelines
The support we provide works well
Therapy equips clients with psychological strategies to manage overwhelming emotions, enabling them to pursue the things that are most important to them in life, regardless of prognosis. Our own data tell us that 100% of our clients would recommend the service to their own family and friends; and that, through therapy, clients’ distress levels reduce from severe to healthy. Recent comments from clients include the following:
“Genuine empathy and proven strategies which I can utilise every day, delivered in a professional and friendly manner”
“This has been a very caring environment which has helped me “grow…” a lot and [the therapist] has been exceptionally understanding and helped me out of a dark place”
“[The therapist] really listened and was not judgemental. Her advice was very helpful; she came across as very understanding, and had some very useful techniques to follow”
Our plans for the next 12 months
It is our intention over the next 12 months to set up another service as part of the Manx Cancer Help family. This will allow us to offer the same high levels of psychological support to people of any age with any life changing illness and it will be a significant development for us which will require substantial investment in increasing out team of accredited therapists to ensure that we can continue to run the service with minimal waiting times.
Manx Cancer Help has been supporting people touched by cancer since 1983. Psychological support is now considered a vital component of cancer treatment, and is funded by the NHS in the UK. We provide the psychological cancer support for the Isle of Man health service, and fund this entirely through grant applications and fundraising. To continue to run this invaluable service, we need to raise £300K per year, all of which goes towards providing clinical services from a relaxing, non-clinical “home-from-home” venue near to Nobles Hospital. Given that we are a relatively small charity, we have a high profile on the island, thanks to the high-quality service we provide. In the recent economic climate, raising £300K per year is a challenge and we would really welcome any financial, advisory, or other support you might be able to offer to provide us with a sustainable income which would allow us to plan for the future rather than rely on the erratic nature of event fundraising that can be very unpredictable.
